US Senate unanimously confirms Marco Rubio as secretary of state

WASHINGTON, DC – The U.S. Senate has unanimously confirmed Senator Marco Rubio as the next secretary of state.

Rubio, a descendant of Cuban immigrants, was born in Miami, Florida, and has represented his state as a senator since 2011. He was a presidential candidate in 2016 before being defeated by President Donald Trump in the Florida primary, after which he suspended his campaign and subsequently endorsed Trump.

On Monday, on the day of the inauguration of President Trump as the 47th preisdent of the United States, the senate unanimously cornfirmed Rubio as the next secretary of state, with the vote 99-nil.

Rubio will now resign from the senate, and is expected to be sworn in as secretary of state on Tuesday morning.

He replaces Antony Blinken, 62, whose tenure has come to an end. Blinken served as secretary of state for the full four years of the Joe Biden presidency.
