Veteran Channel 9 political reporter, Laurie Oakes, who had a legendary career in Australian television, principally with the 9 network, for more than 50 years and announced recently he was retiring, was educated locally.
Oakes, who was born in Newcastle, moved with his family to Wallerawang when he was 9 years old. He grew up in the local area and was educated at Lithgow High School.
Oaks attributes his career in journalism, which has brought him a number of awards, to his English master at Lithgow High, Ivan Kinny.
“He was a wonderful teacher who helped me develop an interest in writing,” the veteran reporter said.
Oakes retired from the Nine Network on Friday.
